Where are standards developed?

Standards neither come "from Brussels" nor are they made by a standardisation institute.

Austrian Standards Institute – the platform for standardisation in Austria – provides the infrastructure for the development of standards, organises standardisation work and supports the committees in finding consensus.

Among other things, the committee-managers care for:

  • information and invitation of experts from all parties affected by a topic

  • the formation of opinion about European and International standards-projects

  • observing relevant Austrian legal provisions

  • merging data with other Austrian associations

  • maintaining the required procedures (terms and conditions)

  • ensuring consensus-based decisions

  • publication of documents (draft standards) for public enquiry

  • Veröffentlichung der fertigen Dokumente

Standards are consensus-based rules documenting the state of the art. They are developed by experts of the affected and interested parties and are available to everybody.
