Support of European legal provisions
Within the framework of the "New Approach" the European Union decided to specify only the basic requirements for products or services related to health, safety, construction or function in its Directives and decrees.
The concrete formulation of these legal concepts results through ("harmonised") European Standards to which reference is made.
Consequently, they represent in fact the basis for the "CE marking of products" which are in the range of application of one (or more) EU Directive(s), e.g. construction products, machinery, toys, personal safety equipment, etc.
Standards are therefore a precondition for the access to the market and the foundation of free trade.
