What is an ON Rule?
ON Rules (ON-Regel) are quickly available normative documents which do not have to meet all requirements, concerning the development process, of a "typical" standard.
On European and international level "Workshop Agreements" (CEN, ISO) and "Publicly Available Specifications" (ISO) have been established.
Austrian Standards Institute has chosen the ON Rule (ONR in short) as its solution for this kind of consensus management.
Why ONR?
An ONR offers an excellent oportunity to document a new and rapidly changing development and/or a quick solution for a problem if it is not an absolute necessity to fulfil the strict criteria of a standard.
An ONR bridges the gap between ÖNORMs that are based on broad consensus and those specifications that are for instance developed by one or a few companies or institutions.
A subsequent introduction of a standard (ÖNORM) can be prepared.
