Development of an International Standard

As it is the case for each standard, an International Standard is also based on a concrete need, articulated by a proposal.

Such a proposal can be submitted by a member of the International Organization for Standardization ISO, such as Austrian Standards Institute, by the secretariat of an ISO Technical Committee (TC) or Subcommitte (SC) or by an international specialised organisation with ISO liaison status.

If the simple majority of the national standards organisations active in the respective subject field (participants = P-Members) approves the proposal, and if a sufficient number of P-Members commit themselves to active cooperation, the proposal will be either included into the work programme of an existing competent TC or SC, or a new TC will be founded.

The secretariat of this ISO/TC or SC will be managed by an ISO member. The contents of the International Standard are developed by a Working Group (WG) of experts delegated by their national standards organisations.
