A new technical committee of CEN/CENELEC draws up standards for fire safety and security service providers.
Vienna (AS prm, 2011-08-01)
Be it "perceived" or real threats: a rapidly increasing number of enterprises and households install diverse fire safety and security systems. Many companies offer services related to such systems. These services require special rules and principles — after all, you want to be able to trust your consultants.
Upon Germany’s request, the European standardization organizations CEN and CENELEC just set up the joint project committee „Services for fire safety and security systems“ (CEN/CENELEC/TC 4) which is going to develop standards in this field within the framework of the European Services Directive.
Competence & qualification
"Specifically, the TC will prepare an ‘umbrella standard’ in a first step," explains Ing. Martin Lorenz, the committee manager in charge at Austrian Standards. "It will lay down the requirements for the quality of companies and for the competence of their employees in planning, project management, installation, initial operation, handover and maintenance of fire safety and security systems." They include fire alarm, fire-extinguishing, voice alert, intrusion detection, hold-up alarm, access control, social alarm as well as smoke and heat control systems or video surveillance, escape and emergency routing systems and combinations thereof.
The Austrian contribution to these activities will be co-ordinated by TC 172 "Automatic fire-fighting systems2 whose members have long-standing experiences in the development of related national standards. Mr. Lorenz points out: "As complex issues from numerous fields are involved, experts from diverse TCs are invited to contribute actively to this work so that Austria’s interests are optimally represented in the new CEN/CENELEC/TC 4."
